the alex martin "thistle" 4.25"

not with the big "d" but probably by dingley but if not then by walker bampton.the thistle is the scottish version of the perfect , and in my opinion better.it has the same check as the dup mk11 but is altogether a nice reel. the sound is great, the feel is also great. but for me the fat nickel silver drum-screw with the washer is so attractive.this is a lovely version with the brass line -guide and brass rim mounted criss crossed tension adjuster.full alloy reel with 4 screw mounted brass foot all original . lovely reel

-----------------------------------------

farlows alloy coinbrake 4.25"

absolutely lovely reel with the original cow horn handle and half coin adjuster on the rear ,oil hole, original farlows block foot, farlows  inscription on backlate.fine original undamaged  condition

-----------------------------------------

bernard & son dingley 4.5"

------------------------------------------------------------------

hardys brass faced perfect 4.75"

this is a real cracker, especially because of the size but its also in mint condition. the alloy foot was a bit of a mistake and not many survived but this one is mint. all 3 stamped logos , ivory handle ,alloy perforated spool ,nickel silver drum screw, rim mounted tension adjuster , 1896 style check mechanism. an absolutely stunning and rare reel , one of the finest in the collection

---------------------------------------------------

alloy dingley 4" perfect style reel

this is a lovely simple top quality reel made by walter dingley whose D1 is stamped inside. 3 part perfect  style reel with all brass strapped rim mounted tension adjuster  , brass drum screw, lovely perforated spool with dingley trademark grooves between perforations , brass foot, ball bearings and  dup mk11 style check system. thiere are no other marks on the reel but this was common with dingleys.  hard to get mint dingleys now and the price is rising all the time

---------------------------------------------------

malloch alloy perfect style reel 4 and 2/16th"

this is a hard to find reel. its by malloch and is in the 3 part perfect style with spring caliper check . it is of alloy construction and has a clockwise brass drumscrew , ivory handle , brass foot . a nice simple top quality scottish reel just a shade over 4" with the malloch shield stamp on faceplate. lovely crisp sounding check on this one and would be a superb reel to use

---------------------------------------------------

malloch wood and brass perth style 4.5"

you have to love these reels , they are  beautifully crafted out of wood and brass. im not sure if this one is rosewood but it certainly seems to be. it has the malloch scroll logo on the brass faceplate, rosewood handle, 4 brass pillar construction, full length original brass foot, just a shade over 4.5" , all in fine original condition. im gonna use this to get a fish this year because its such a  simple reel to use and the check is loud, crisp and simply sounds beautiful when wound. these reels used to be common but there are not many around now in original condition

---------------------------------------------------

all brass hercules style anderson edinburgh 4.75" reel

this is a cracking reel, its huge at 4.75" all brass makes it very heavy, 4 brass pillar construction in hercules style , ebony handle, lovely patina, original line, all in superb mint condition, with r. anderson & sons princess st. eninburgh neatly engraved on faceplate. you would need to be hercules yourself to use this reel as it weighs a ton. still a lovely piece and one of my favourites.

---------------------------------------------------

hardy marquis salmon no. 2

not exactly as vintage as some of the others but still to this day one of the finest series of reels hardy ever made, apart from the later versions with the plastic interior. happy to say this is the original silver face version with lovely internal check mechanism , 2 screw drum release latch, ribbed brass foot, multi perforated spool rear plate tension adjuster, details beautifully engraved on rear plate too. in almost unused condition. these reels are hitting the roof at auctions at the moment and no wonder because they are lovely to use

---------------------------------------------------

malloch brass and ebonite reel with silver rims 4.5"

this is a nice reel. it is of mostly brass construction with ebonite backplate, german nickel silver rims , possibly cowhorn handle, 4 pillar platewind style reel , 4.5" with the pd malloch shield on the faceplate. a lovely top quality heavy old reel still in a1 condition with no damage to the ebonite or rims

---------------------------------------------------

malloch alloy centrebrake 4.25"

fine reels these centrebrakes, and simple easy to use design. this one is all a1 built of alloy and 4 pillar construction, ivory handle, central tension adjuster malloch logo engraved on faceplate . top quality reel to use with a great sounding check

---------------------------------------------------

hardy bougle mkVI 4" lightweight

possibly the worst reel in the collection, i bought it as a novelty really. anyway its unused with original box pouch etc. its a 4" re-issue of the classic bougle made of some kind of aluminium by a robot in korea, costs a fortune but is a pile of shite. it looks cheap , the rim mounted tension adjuster is plain , internal design is pretty good though and the check is good and loud which is about the only good thing about this reel. i guess i just prefer them handmade and with a lot of history

---------------------------------------------------

malloch sun & planet brass & ebonite 4.75"

this is what vintage reels are all about , an absolute stunner of a reel. typical solid quality by mallochs . brass facefplate with malloch logo, fat bulbous ebony handle , central drumscrew with original bush, german nickel silver rims, ebonite backplate 4 pillar construction, original un-altered foot, beautiful interior with the sun and planet design, no damage anywhere at all. have a good look at the photos , this is definately one of my favourites and is as good as the day it was made

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------

robertsons of glasgow brass platewind 4"

nice plain reel this with its lovely patina. made by robertsons of glasgow it is a good quality heavy all brass platewind style reel at 4". it has nice cowhorn handle and makers details engraved on faceplate , as well as 3 graduating circles just to give it a little style. 4 pillar construction in superb original condition

---------------------------------------------------

forest of kelso patent adjustable drag 4"

absolutely stunning reel this one, by forrest of kelso it is of alloy construction 4 pillar frame, full length centrally pierced brass foot, ivory handle, engraved makers details on faceplate, lovely knurled drumscrew and large fat knurled slotted tension adjuster, spring caliper check, and original line the beauty of this reel is the patent drag, which is a diamond shaped brass part located behind the faceplate. there is a small steel roller pillar located on both ends. tightening the adjuster on the outside presses against the bras diamond and the whole thing rotates. its a wonderful piece of scottish engineering. this would be a great reel to use because of the wide drum and loud clean  crisp check it also looks stunning

---------------------------------------------------

cogswell & harrison 4" alloy reel

this is a nice little reel. i think it must have been made for cogswell & harrison by allcocks, because it is so similar to "the marvel", but without the rim tensioner or lineguide.still a good reel, with ivory handle, 2 screw drum release latch, twin internal checks and springs, 3 screw brass foot and engraved on the backplate "cogswell & harrison ltd , 188 piccadilly, london w1", i believe they were gunmakers.

---------------------------------------------------

percy wadhams "the test" 4.5"

this is a truly stunning reel made by percy wadhams ltd isle of wight.it is of alloy construction , 3 pillar frame , multi perforated spool with engraved circles in centre, ivory handle, brass foot , lovely rim mounted on -off check lever with ivory ball, push in button on rear for drum release, internally it is nice too with a spring caliper check and a ball bearing race incorporated into the central core, engraved on rear 2percy wadhams newport i.w specialities ltd", it also has "the test" engraved on it too.  this also has the original leather case which is lined with dark red and is in a1 condition the condition of reel and case is truly stunning. this really would be more of a trotting reel but could be used as a fly reel too , but its too good to use and a very hard to find reel from master reelmakers

---------------------------------------------------

alex martin "caledonia" 4"

this is of alloy 3 pillar construction with multi perforated spool, nice fat knurled brass drum screw , 4 screw smooth brass foot, single internal check. probably made by walter dingley although the trademark "D" is  absent. it is engraved on the rear "alex martin glasgow edinburgh aberdeen", it also has "caledonia" , and a thistle motif. all in all a cracking little reel

---------------------------------------------------

farlows alloy 4.25"

quite a plain reel this one but still top quality, with nice perforated drum , crazed ivorine handle , 3 screw smooth brass foot , single internal check , offset button drum release. it is of 4 pillar alloy construction and is engraved "c farlow & co. ltd london" perhaps not the most elegant reel farlows made but still top quality in perfect condition

---------------------------------------------------

army & navy hercules style brass reel 4.5"

gorgeous reel this one with its unique patina. it is all brass 4 pillar construction with what looks like horn handle, original waisted, pierced teardrop style foot stamped 4 1/2" , beautifully engravef on the face plate "a & n c s makers  105 victoria street westminster" , which is of course "army & navy co-op society ltd" these reels are doing well at the moment and are becoming evermore sought after and quite hard to get them in original condition like this one.

odd little reel this one but still nice. its engraved "wallace & kerr , edinburgh" and is of alloy 3 pillar construction with smooth 3 screw brass foot, offset drum release button , crazed ivorine handle , single internal check, 4" diameter and with original line. good quality reel possibly made by j.w. youngs

---------------------------------------------------

dickson & son edinburgh perfect style alloy reel 4"

good reel this one its engraved " j dickson & son edinburgh" and is of 3 pillar alloy construction with rim mounted knurled tension adjuster, brass lineguide, 3 part perfect style reel with dup mkII style check, brass drum screw, multi perforated spool, smooth 4 screw brass foot ball bearing race and loaded with grease . in stunning condition with original line.

---------------------------------------------------

custom made perfect style aluminium reel 4"

this reel was made by a now deceased neighbour of mine, he was an engineer and an avid fisherman. his name was william (willie) fenton). he was good at his job and made a good job of this reel. its 4" aluminium in a perfect style , with mult perforated spool, 3 pillar frame , rotating nickel silver line guide, brass drum screw dup mkII style check, knurled brass rim mounted tension adjuster ,ball bearing race,  engraved circles on frontplate . i always wanted this reel just because of its history and the fact that i knew the guy makes it even more special. to be honest the foot could have been made better  but the reel is all original and has caught many big fish over the years , not worth much but big on sentimental value because he loved fishing so much and obviously put a lot of effort into this project

---------------------------------------------------

alex martin "caledonia" dingley built 4" alloy reel

very similar to the other "caledonia" i have but this one has the "D1" stamp indicating that it was built by walter  dingley.this one is  a telephone latch and has un-perforated drum , unlike the other. it is of alloy construction with 3 pillar frame, ivory handle, smooth pillared brass foot , single internal check. it is nicely engraved "alex martin glasgow edinburgh & aberdeen caledonia" it also has the thistle motif i do love alex martin reels i have to say. they are  lovely to play with and visually very attractive too.

---------------------------------------------------

eaton & deller brass & ebonite 5" reel

now we,re talking. this is definately one for all you collectors. i paid big money for this but it was well worth it , its an absolute cracker. it is constructed of mostly ebonite frame , with brass faceplate and 5 pillar construction. the beauty of this reel is the leather factory fitted thumb-brake on the 2nd front pillar this is so unique , its truly stunning.it has a bulbous ebony handle and is almost in a "perth style" construction replacing the wood  with ebonite. its enormous too at a full 5" .it also has the typical short brass pillar foot as seen on these eaton & deller reels this is original and not filed.  this was probably meant as a trolling reel but im determined to get at least 1 fish on it on the fly just to hear the magnificent check howl. i would say this reel is the finest in my collection, however its not my personal favourite. it also has an original line on it. what else can i say other than its a true stunner in completely original condition and VERY VERY rare

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------

farlows brass coinbrake 4.25"

malloch brass platewind reel 4.5"

plain and simple reel this one. it has the p.d. malloch shield stamped on the frontplate, it is of very solid heavy 4 pillar brass construction at 4.5" with full lungth original pillared brass foot, cow horn handle and original line. comes in absolutely a1 condition and is as good as the day it was made with good strong check and lovely patina with a good wide drum

farlows alloy sea trout reel 4"

this is a beautiful little reel . it is of 3 pillar alloy construction with multi perforated spool, brass drumscrew, nickel silver rimmed agate line guide, crazed ivorine handle, single internal check, 3 screw original brass foot. it has a narrow drum so it really would be more of a sea-trout reel. its in perfect condition with no cracks to the agate also with the holdfast logo and the makers details stamped on rear plate . quite a plain simple reel but beautifully crafted and has a lovely clean sound

---------------------------------------------------

john gow alloy reel 4"

nice old simple style 4 pillar framed alloy reel with "john r gow & sons, dundee" stamped on the backplate with crazed ivorine handle, twin internal checks, 3 screw original length brass foot, offset drum release button and a diameter of 4". this is a good reel and retains most of its leaded finish, perhaps made by one of the big companies like j.w. youngs or allcocks

---------------------------------------------------

ogden smith perfect style alloy reel 4.25"

cracking reel this one. it has the ogden smiths logo with the mermaid sitting on a fish with the 2 hooks on the outside , also has the makers name and adress engraved on the frontplate. i have tried to take pictures but its lightly engraved so quitehard to see. the reel is 4.25" diameter and of 4 pillar alloy construction in the 3 part perfect style with 3 screw original brass foot, metal lineguide , knurled nickel silver drum screw, crazed ivorine handle, knurled rim mounted nickel silver tension adjuster, multi perforated spool, dup mkII style twin checks and ball bearing race. although it is very similar to the perfect, it doesnt screw together. the faceplate simply slots onto the central spindle and is locked with the drum screw. this is a stunning top quality reel its a shame so much of the original finish is gone but i may get it re-leaded at some point, its very hard to find ogden smith salmon reels now in perfect condition

---------------------------------------------------

allcocks " the marvel" 4"

---------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------

all brass malloch centrebrake 4.5"

another truly stunning reel, this is the all brass version of the centrebrake with 4 pillar construction, ivory handle, original length pillared brass foot and nicely stamped on the faceplate with the malloch logo. there are a lot of the alloy centrebrakes around but the brass ones are very hard to find, especially with the full length foot. this reel is so solidly built and is quite a simple easy to use design but a little heavy to use every day i use it now and again thats why the backing line is still on it. when you get a fish on this reel it can be heard by everyone i love it and its definately one of my favourites

---------------------------------------------------

farlow all brass patent lever 4.25"

very old reel this. its of solid 4 pillared brass construction, cow horn handle, typical farlow block brass foot, spring celiper check 2 roller pillars, oil hole,  knurled patent tension adjuster on backplate , neatly engraved "patent lever no. 795 chas farlow & co makers 191 strand london" on backplate . this really is a cracking reel and very old too being one of the first of the patent levers before the introduction of the coinbrake . good strong check on this and lovely sound when playing a fish.

---------------------------------------------------

all brass moore sun & planet by malloch 4.25"

-----------------------------------------------------------

john macgowan brass trolling winch 4"

absolute stunner this one , its by john macgowan of london and has the details engraved on the faceplate. it has all brass block foot ,3 screw faceplate, ivory handle , rear plate raised check housing , pillared construction with 2 single and 2 twin pillars 2 of which are rolling pillars. this is a very old reel, probably the oldest in the collection circa 1860,s. it is really a trolling winch rather than a fly reel but it can be used for both. because of the age of the reel it is exeptionally hard to get them in this fine original condition

-----------------------------------------------------------

hardy uniqua 4.25"

fine original "uniqua" alloy reel made by hardys. this one is 4.25" diameter and has a 5 pillar frame, nickel silver telephone latch drum release, 4 screw small ribbed brass foot, dup mkII checks, internally stamped with the number 1 & the makers initials r.r , which stands for robert richardson, who made fly reels for hardy from 1938-1950. it is also stamped on the backplate "made by hardy bros ltd england"  and also "the uniqua 4 1/4" nice reel this in fine condition with most of the lead finish still intact

---------------------------------------------------

robertsons of glasgow brass platewind 4.25"

this is an odd reel , i have never seen the dove logo with the makers name details on the robertsons reels , also it has an alloy spool.the reel is 4.25 wide and has lovely horn handle, full correct pillared brass foot (slightly shorter than on my other robertsons reel ) , but still correct, central drum screw , 6 pillar construction . it is a very old reel in the platewind style also in great condition.. any info on the dove logo would be appreciated

---------------------------------------------------

w. garden brass platewind 4.25"

this is just a simple all brass platewind reel 4.25" wide , 6 pillar construction , pillared full length foot , stamped "w. garden aberdeen" on faceplate , horn handle , spindle drum core. quite a basic reel but exellent quality in fantastic condition with a lovely patina

----------------------------------------------------------

the cardinal 57,s

in my opinion the best salmon spinning reel ever made , the reason i have so many is to ensure i always have 1 working model and so will my son. these reels are all in perfect order. i love fly fishing but when the water is too big you have to change rivers and tactics, these reels wont let you down and are truly superb for the big rivers. i have landed countless fish on the one i use regularly..
