10. when your casting is absolutely perfect and everything is finely tuned and you look good and your timing is perfect it doesnt matter whether you catch anything as you are truly contented just to be there.
9. arriving at a pool which has been fished all day with no success and instantly getting into a fish , to the dismay of other anglers. (lets be honest we all love doing it).
8. catching a fish on a fly you have made yourself , this is a good feeling
and more people should take up tying their own flies as salmon flies are
becoming so expensive.
7. hearing the reel scream when the fish runs.
6. having an audience watch you land a fish. (once again lets be honest we all love it).
5. being surrounded by nature and seeing things that some people will never see , an otter or an osprey taking a fish , i seen 2 seals fighting once that was hilarious , kingfishers , heron , mink , seals , canada geese , grass snakes , ospreys. the things you see are truly wonderful. not so wonderful however was the bag of kittens that floated past me once!!!
4. saying "right thats it " and having one last cast , and thats the one you get a fish on.. its surprising how often this happens.
3. getting a little wriggle thinking you have a small trout on and it turns out to be a big salmon that has not yet realised it is hooked!! then all hell breaks loose.
2. having an unbelievable day , some days you cant miss and these days dont come along very often but when they do and you get 4 , 5 fish or more in one day its a day that will stay in your memory forever. (my best ever was 8 in one day) , probably lost 8 too.
its all about being in the right place at the right time.
1. number 1 has to be , beating your personal best. there is no better feeling than playing a fish and knowing its the biggest you have ever had , and when you land it your jaw hits the ground. getting good photos and having a witness is good too.
additions from other anglers..
teaching someone to fish and seeing them get a
fish.
buying & trying out new tackle.
